Silver Door
“It was during this writing period that I began to tune out”
June 15/16 2012
I don’t remember all of the details. I know had officially moved back to Toronto from Vancouver, and was propelled headfirst into a the beginnings of what would be a very successful and fast career in commercial film. We had compiled about 10 or 11 songs that we intended to demo. Our good friend Jon Gerson (Formerly of The Getaway) was building a studio and offered to record the band to get experience, as well as to run his equipment and workflow through it’s paces.
6 of the songs ended up on the Ep “ Silver Door” and the rest ended up in the ether of lost causes. Eventually “Black Mamba” made it onto the 2nd L.P No Virtue. I still think there were some great songs that came out of this time. This was when the “great divide” began inside of me. I was so sick of being in debt, and all of a sudden I had an insanely well paid job.
“Poli’s song” is probably the best song on the record. The power of Andrews voice and the way he can emote it will always give me chills. The last chorus is so fucking good. “Cards in place” was another one that just ruled to play live - It wasn’t always this way.
I really didn’t enjoy playing these songs at first. I struggled with it for years.
They always felt cold. From the writing process to finally playing them live things were kind of broken up so much that I had begun to tune out of Sights and really focus on this film career. By the time it came to mixing I didn’t give a shit about the songs, or the process and still felt like we were supposed to be writing a massive 2nd record that would be a growth from Monolith. The guitar solo on “Hold on Me” was the first time I did something like that. I remember feeling hyper critical about it. I’m listening to it now and realize it’s great. nice job me.
The events that forced the demos to become an actual release was an offer to tour Europe with “Bring Me The Horizon”, the band needed to have something new. I remember pushing pretty hard to do the tour and have the E.P. out. in order to service a new audience and if there were any fans making the trek to see us we had to give them something. I bailed on the tour fairly last minute for a number reasons.
